EU to attend U.S. trade, tech council as French fury eases

BRUSSELS, Sept 23 (Reuters) – The inaugural assembly of the U.S.-EU Commerce and Know-how Council (TTC) will go forward as deliberate subsequent week after it was put unsure due to French anger over the scrapping of a $40 billion submarine contract.

The European Fee, which oversees commerce coverage for the 27-nation European Union, mentioned on Thursday the assembly in Pittsburgh would happen, and EU commerce chief Valdis Dombrovskis mentioned on Twitter that he could be attending.

France has been incensed by Australia’s choice final week to cancel a French contract and decide as a substitute for a cope with the US and Britain to buy nuclear-powered submarines as a part of a brand new safety partnership referred to as AUKUS.

Paris recalled its ambassadors to Washington and Canberra for consultations and French International Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian informed U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Thursday it could take “time and actions” to revive confidence.

French fury had threatened to pressure the postponement or cancellation of the primary assembly of the TTC.

The council goals to agree on frequent know-how requirements and has working teams on points akin to supply-chain safety, inexperienced know-how, knowledge governance and export controls.

The U.S. co-chairs – Blinken, Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and Commerce Consultant Katherine Tai – will host European Fee Govt Vice Presidents Margrethe Vestager and Dombrovskis for the primary assembly subsequent Wednesday.
